Caribbean Sea eddies inferred from TOPEX/POSEIDON altimetry and a 1/6& Atlantic Ocean model simulation

چکیده
Large cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies are found in the Caribbean Sea. Analysis of sea level data from the TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter shows that the eddies are quite regular, appearing at near 3-month intervals west of the southern Lesser Antilles. These eddies progress westward at average speeds of 12 cm s, growing in amplitude up to 20 cm. Many eddies dissipate in the coastal waters of Nicaragua a half year after they appear. A 1/68 3 1/68 general circulation model of the Atlantic is shown to reproduce major features of the eddy life cycle, including their amplitudes, temporal scales, and propagation speed. Analysis of the model output further suggests that the eddies are mainly limited to the thermocline and above, with little phase lag in the vertical. The simulated eddies have sufficiently strong currents that the horizontal gradient of total vorticity changes sign, suggesting that conversions from mean to eddy kinetic energy may be contributing to their growth. Analysis of the simulation links eddies in the Caribbean with eddies formed outside the Caribbean at the confluence of the North Brazil Current and North Equatorial Countercurrent systems.

Ocean circulation from altimetry: progresses and challenges
The paper provides a review of recent progresses in physical oceanography, such as results on studying ocean circulation and mesoscale ocean dynamics derived from satellite altimetry. Since 1992, satellite altimetry has provided an unprecedented 16 years monitoring of sea level and ocean circulation variations. Continuous measurements from satellites like TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason-1 help us und...
متن کاملErs-2 Altimetry in Operational Noaa Forecast Models
NOAA's Laboratory for Satellite Altimetry has been producing real-time altimetry products from ERS-1 and ERS-2 since 1995. Significant enhancements are made to ESA's fast-delivery data sets, most notably the addition of orbit information provided by the Delft University of Technology. In late 1998, several enhancements were made to the NOAA/Delft altimetry products: ESA's fast-delivery data now...
متن کاملEnergy characteristics of tidal and residual level variations in the Okhotsk Sea from satellite altimetry data
A unified satellite altimetry database, TOPEX/Poseidon (1993–2002) and Jason-1 (2002–2007) containing about 7,000 locations, was created for the Okhotsk Sea and adjacent areas. Amplitudes and phases of main tidal consituents were calculated for each location, and maps of tidal character and height were constructed. It is shown that diurnal waves dominate in the amphidromic areas of semidiurnal ...

An open boundary ocean model is configured in a domain bounded by the four TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P) ground tracks surrounding the U.S. Joint Global Ocean Flux Study Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) site. This implementation facilitates prescription of model boundary conditions directly from altimetric measurements (both T/P and ERS-2). The expected error characteristics for a domain of thi...
متن کاملLeast Squares Techniques for Extracting Water Level Fluctuations in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea
Extracting the main cyclic fluctuations from sea level changes of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea is vital for understanding the behavior of tides and isolating non-tidal impacts such as those related to climate and changes in the ocean-sea circulations. This study compares two spectral analysis methods including: Least Squares Spectral Analysis (LSSA) and Least Squares Harmonic Estimation (LSHE)...
